PNLC Technology

What is PNLC Technology?

PNLC (Polymer Network Liquid Crystal) is a switchable liquid crystal technology designed for smart privacy glass and film. Unlike conventional PDLC, PNLC provides a clear state when powered off and a frosted privacy state when powered on, making it ideal for spaces where transparency is required most of the time.

PNLC uses liquid crystal materials combined with a polymer network to control light transmission and scattering through an electrical field. With reverse switching, instant privacy and low energy consumption, PNLC is widely used in office partitions, meeting rooms, hotels, healthcare facilities and other smart privacy glazing applications.

How It Works

Our streamlined 6-step introduction explains the core working principle of PNLC switchable film:

How It Works

01

Polymer Network Structure

Liquid crystals are distributed within a polymer network, sandwiched between two transparent conductive layers.

02

Power Off State (Clear)

Without electricity, the liquid crystal structure allows light to pass through. The film remains clear and transparent.

03

Apply Electric Current

When voltage is applied, an electric field forms across the PNLC film’s conductive layers

04

Liquid Crystal Reorientation

The electric field changes the orientation of the liquid crystals, causing incoming light to scatter.

05

Power On State (Opaque)

Scattered light turns the film frosted and opaque, providing instant visual privacy.

06

Reversible Switching

Cut off power, and the film quickly returns to its clear state. The switching process is fully reversible.

FAQ

  • Q1:

What is PNLC Smart Film and how does it work?

    A:

PNLC, also referred to as reverse PDLC film. Unlike standard PDLC film, PNLC remains transparent in the power-off state and switches to frosted opaque when powered on. Our PNLC film delivers excellent UV resistance, making it suitable for sunlit windows and sun-exposed glass applications.

  • Q2:

What Is the Main Difference Between PNLC and PDLC Smart Film?

    A:

The main difference is what happens when power is off. PDLC is frosted without power and clear when powered on. PNLC works in reverse: it is clear without power and frosted when powered on.

  • Q3:

    What Does PNLC Stand For?

    A:

PNLC stands for Polymer Network Liquid Crystal. It is often called reverse mode smart film because its clear and frosted states are opposite to those of standard PDLC film.

  • Q4:

Which Film Stays Clear During a Power Outage?

    A:

PNLC stays clear when power is lost. PDLC returns to its frosted state. Consider the required appearance during a power outage when choosing between them.

  • Q5:

Which Film Is Better for Privacy During a Power Outage?

    A:

PDLC is the better choice if the glass must become frosted when power is unavailable. PNLC needs power to maintain its frosted privacy state.

  • Q6:

Which Film Uses Power When the Glass Is Clear?

    A:

PDLC needs power to remain clear; PNLC does not. If the glass will stay clear for most of the day, PNLC may reduce operating time under power. Actual energy use depends on the product and how long each state is used.

  • Q7:

Does PNLC Provide the Same Level of Privacy as PDLC?

    A:

Not exactly. Both films obscure the view in their frosted state, but PNLC generally provides slightly less visual concealment than PDLC. If stronger privacy is the priority, PDLC is usually the better choice. For either film, we recommend testing a sample under the project’s actual lighting and viewing conditions.

  • Q8:

Can PNLC and PDLC Both Be Used for Projection?

    A:

Their frosted states may be used as projection surfaces, subject to the film specification and room lighting. The key planning difference is that PNLC must be powered for its frosted state, while PDLC is frosted without power.

  • Q9:

Are PNLC and PDLC Suitable for Solar Control?

    A:

Both primarily switch between clear and frosted views. A frosted appearance does not by itself indicate strong solar heat reduction. If controlling sunlight and heat is the main goal, compare measured performance for the complete glazing system.

  • Q10:

Where Is PNLC a Better Fit Than PDLC?

    A:

PNLC suits glass that should normally remain transparent, with privacy activated only when needed—for example, a meeting room partition that is usually left open to view. PDLC suits spaces where frosted privacy is the preferred default.

  • Q11:

How Should I Choose Between PNLC and PDLC?

    A:

Start with one question: What should the glass look like when power is off? Choose PNLC for a clear default or PDLC for a frosted default. Then confirm the film’s optical performance, electrical requirements and glass construction for your project.
