EP Technology

What is EP(SPD) Technology?

EP technology is a dynamic light and solar control technology based on a principle similar to Suspended Particle Device (SPD) technology. By adjusting the applied voltage, the film can continuously change from a dark tinted state to highly transparent, providing flexible control of visible light transmission (VLT), glare and solar heat.

With fast response, continuous dimming and clear outside views, EP technology helps balance natural daylight and solar shading while improving indoor comfort and energy efficiency. It is ideal for curtain walls, skylights, glass roofs, windows and other architectural glazing applications requiring dynamic solar control.

How It Works

Our streamlined 6-step introduction explains the core working principle of EP smart film:

How It Works

01

Suspended Particle Layer

Light-absorbing particles are suspended within the EP functional layer between transparent conductive films.

02

Power Off State (Dark)

Without voltage, the suspended particles are randomly oriented, absorbing and blocking incoming light.

03

Apply Voltage

When voltage is applied, an electric field is created across the conductive layers.

04

Particle Alignment

The suspended particles align with the electric field, allowing more visible light to pass through.

05

Power On State (Clear)

As the particles align, light transmission increases and the film changes from dark to highly transparent.

06

Continuous Dimming Control

By adjusting the voltage, particle alignment can be controlled to achieve continuously adjustable VLT from dark to clear, providing dynamic control of daylight, glare and solar heat.

FAQ

  • Q1:

    What Is EP Smart Film?

    A:

EP smart film is InnoGlass’s adjustable solar control film similar to SPD technology. It lets users change the tint of their glazing to manage daylight, glare and visual comfort.

  • Q2:

What Happens When EP Film Is Powered Off?

    A:

The film returns to its dark state when power is off. When power is applied, it becomes lighter and allows more daylight through the glass.

  • Q3:

Can EP Film Stop at a Tint Between Dark and Clear?

    A:

Yes. EP film supports intermediate tint settings, so users can choose a light level that suits the time of day instead of switching only between two states.

  • Q4:

How Is EP Film Different from PDLC Privacy Film?

    A:

PDLC switches between a transparent view and a white frosted privacy state. EP changes how dark the glass appears while retaining its role as solar control glazing. The better choice depends on whether the project prioritizes frosted privacy or adjustable shading.

  • Q5:

Does Darker EP Glass Provide Complete Privacy?

    A:

A darker tint can make it harder to see through the glass, but it should not be specified as complete visual privacy without checking the selected product and lighting conditions. If dependable obscured-view privacy is essential, ask about a dedicated privacy film.

  • Q6:

Can EP Film Reduce Glare Without Blocking All Daylight?

    A:

Yes. An intermediate tint can soften strong daylight while still admitting light. This makes EP useful where sunlight changes throughout the day, such as skylights and sun-facing windows.

  • Q7:

Does EP Film Reduce Heat from the Sun?

    A:

EP film is designed for solar control, but the heat reduction of a finished window depends on the full glazing assembly. Ask for the relevant performance data for the proposed laminated glass or IGU when comparing project options.

  • Q8:

Does EP Film Need Power to Stay Clear?

    A:

Yes. EP film requires power to maintain a lighter state. If power is interrupted, it returns to dark. The controller should be selected for the film and the intended control method.

  • Q9:

Can EP Film Be Supplied as Finished Glass?

    A:

InnoGlass can produce EP film as a component of laminated glass and EP laminated glass incorporated into an IGU. The suitable construction depends on the glazing size, installation position and project specifications.

  • Q10:

Which Projects Are a Good Fit for EP Smart Glass?

    A:

EP is a strong option for skylights, roof glazing, façades, windows and doors exposed to changing sunlight. It gives occupants control over tint where a permanently dark glass would limit daylight at other times.
