DLC Technology

What is DLC Technology?

DLC (Dye Liquid Crystal) technology combines liquid crystal and dye materials to provide both privacy and dynamic light control. By applying an electric field, the liquid crystal and dye molecules change their orientation, allowing the glass to switch from a dark privacy state to a transparent state.

Unlike conventional privacy-only smart film, DLC provides additional solar shading and light control, helping reduce excessive sunlight while improving privacy and indoor comfort. It is ideal for windows, doors, partitions, hotels, residential buildings and other smart glazing applications where both privacy and solar control are required.

How It Works

Our streamlined 6-step introduction explains the core working principle of DLC smart film:

How It Works

01

Dye Liquid Crystal Layer

Dye molecules and liquid crystal materials are integrated into a functional layer between transparent conductive films.

02

Power Off State – Dark & Opaque

Without electricity, the liquid crystal and dye molecules reduce light transmission, creating a dark privacy state.

03

Apply Voltage

When voltage is applied, an electric field forms across the conductive layers.

04

Molecular Alignment

The electric field changes the orientation of the liquid crystal and dye molecules, allowing more light to pass through.

05

Power On State – Clear

With the molecules aligned, visible light transmission increases and the film becomes clear and transparent.

06

Reversible Switching

When the power is switched off, the molecules return to their original state and the film becomes dark and opaque again.

FAQ

  • Q1:

What Is the Main Difference Between Black PDLC and Black DLC Film?

    A:

Black PDLC is made by applying black window film to both sides of white PDLC film. Black DLC uses dye liquid crystal technology to create its dark state. This difference in construction gives Black DLC a wider visible light transmission (VLT) range in InnoGlass’s product lineup.

  • Q2:

Are Both Films Dark When Powered Off?

    A:

Yes. Both appear dark and obscure the view when power is off. Black DLC has a lower off-state VLT, allowing less visible light through in its dark state.

  • Q3:

Which Film Lets in More Light When Powered On?

    A:

Black DLC has a higher on-state VLT than Black PDLC. The black window film on both sides of Black PDLC continues to reduce light transmission even when its PDLC layer is clear.

  • Q4:

Why Is the VLT Change Smaller with Black PDLC?

    A:

The added black window film provides a fixed tint in both electrical states. The PDLC layer can switch between frosted and clear, but the black tint remains, limiting the overall change in VLT.

  • Q5:

Which Film Provides a Darker Off-State?

    A:

Black DLC. Its lower off-state VLT is better suited to projects that want a deeper dark appearance and greater reduction of incoming visible light when the film is off.

  • Q6:

Which Film Is Better for Adjustable Light Control?

    A:

Black DLC is the stronger option when a project needs a larger difference between its dark and clear states. Black PDLC is more suitable when a consistently dark appearance is acceptable and the main requirement is switching the view between obscured and clearer.

  • Q7:

How Should I Choose Between Black PDLC and Black DLC?

    A:

Decide how dark the glass should be when off and how bright it should be when on. Choose Black DLC if you need lower off-state VLT and higher on-state VLT. If Black PDLC’s narrower VLT range meets the project brief, compare samples of both products in the intended glass and lighting conditions before specifying one.

  • Q8:

What Is the Main Difference Between DLC and EP Smart Film?

    A:

DLC (Dye Liquid Crystal) film combines a dark opaque privacy state with adjustable light control. EP film, based on SPD technology, primarily adjusts the tint of the glazing to manage daylight and glare. The key choice is whether the project needs obscured-view privacy or variable shading with a view through the glass.

  • Q9:

What Happens When the Power Is Off?

    A:

InnoGlass DLC becomes dark and opaque when power is off. EP returns to its dark tint. Although both reduce incoming light, a dark EP tint should not automatically be treated as equivalent to DLC’s opaque privacy state.

  • Q10:

Can People See Through DLC and EP Film in Their Dark States?

    A:

DLC’s off-state is designed to obscure the view. EP’s dark state reduces visibility by limiting light, but what can be seen through the glass depends on the selected product and lighting on each side. If visual privacy is essential, test the proposed glazing under the project’s actual lighting conditions.
