PNLC Smart Film
Product Description
PNLC (Polymer Network Liquid Crystal) smart film, also called Reverse PDLC film, normal power off condition is clear, when power on, change to opaque; it is an advanced technology product that leverages the alignment properties of liquid crystal molecules to control light.; it seamlessly switches between transparent and opaque states. This film is widely used in privacy protection, projection displays, and energy-efficient buildings.
PRODUCT STRUCTURE

The working principle and product structure of PNLC (Reverse PDLC Film) are essentially the same as PDLC. It consists of PET layers coated with ITO on both sides, with a liquid crystal polymer layer in the middle. However, unlike traditional PDLC, PNLC remains transparent under normal conditions and turns frosted white when powered on, making it an ideal privacy film.

PNLC Smart Film, also known as Reverse PDLC Film, remains transparent when powered off and turns frosted or opaque when powered on. This makes it an ideal solution for privacy protection in offices, conference rooms, and similar spaces.
APPLICATION
PNLC film is widely used in smart privacy windows and partitions for offices, conference rooms, and homes, allowing easy switching between transparent and frosted modes. It provides a hygienic privacy solution in hospitals and clinics, replacing traditional curtains. In high-end retail and exhibitions, it enhances display flexibility. PNLC film is also applied in luxury cars, yachts, and trains for privacy and anti-glare functions. Hotels and clubs use it for partitions, while banks and financial institutions adopt it for enhanced privacy. Additionally, it serves as a smart screen in advertising and can be used for temporary privacy in security-sensitive environments.

FAQ
Q1:
What Is the Main Difference Between PNLC and PDLC Smart Film?
A:
The main difference is what happens when power is off. PDLC is frosted without power and clear when powered on. PNLC works in reverse: it is clear without power and frosted when powered on.
Q2:
What Does PNLC Stand For?
A:
PNLC stands for Polymer Network Liquid Crystal. It is often called reverse mode smart film because its clear and frosted states are opposite to those of standard PDLC film.
Q3:
Which Film Stays Clear During a Power Outage?
A:
PNLC stays clear when power is lost. PDLC returns to its frosted state. Consider the required appearance during a power outage when choosing between them.
Q4:
Which Film Is Better for Privacy During a Power Outage?
A:
PDLC is the better choice if the glass must become frosted when power is unavailable. PNLC needs power to maintain its frosted privacy state.
Q5:
Which Film Uses Power When the Glass Is Clear?
A:
PDLC needs power to remain clear; PNLC does not. If the glass will stay clear for most of the day, PNLC may reduce operating time under power. Actual energy use depends on the product and how long each state is used.
Q6:
Does PNLC Provide the Same Level of Privacy as PDLC?
A:
Not exactly. Both films obscure the view in their frosted state, but PNLC generally provides slightly less visual concealment than PDLC. If stronger privacy is the priority, PDLC is usually the better choice. For either film, we recommend testing a sample under the project’s actual lighting and viewing conditions.
Q7:
Can PNLC and PDLC Both Be Used for Projection?
A:
Their frosted states may be used as projection surfaces, subject to the film specification and room lighting. The key planning difference is that PNLC must be powered for its frosted state, while PDLC is frosted without power.
Q8:
Are PNLC and PDLC Suitable for Solar Control?
A:
Both primarily switch between clear and frosted views. A frosted appearance does not by itself indicate strong solar heat reduction. If controlling sunlight and heat is the main goal, compare measured performance for the complete glazing system.
Q9:
Where Is PNLC a Better Fit Than PDLC?
A:
PNLC suits glass that should normally remain transparent, with privacy activated only when needed—for example, a meeting room partition that is usually left open to view. PDLC suits spaces where frosted privacy is the preferred default.
Q10:
How Should I Choose Between PNLC and PDLC?
A:
Start with one question: What should the glass look like when power is off? Choose PNLC for a clear default or PDLC for a frosted default. Then confirm the film’s optical performance, electrical requirements and glass construction for your project.
