Smart glass, also known as switchable or dynamic glass, is a type of glazing that can change its optical properties in response to electricity or light. Different smart glass technologies are designed for different purposes, including privacy, solar control and glare reduction.
Electrochromic (EC) smart glass uses a functional coating integrated into the glass unit. It gradually changes its tint level to control sunlight, glare and solar heat while maintaining outward visibility. EC glass is commonly used in architectural IGU systems.
PDLC, PNLC, DLC and SPD technologies use a functional film laminated between glass substrates.
PDLC / PNLC: Instant visual privacy
DLC: Privacy with darker solar shading
SPD: Dynamic light and solar control
The functional film can be incorporated into laminated or insulated glazing systems depending on the technology and project requirements.
Smart glass can be used for:
Office partitions and meeting rooms
Doors and bathroom glass
Hotel and residential interiors
Curtain walls and exterior glazing
Skylights and other daylight-control applications
For exterior projects, the complete glass structure should be designed according to safety, structural, thermal, weather and local building-code requirements.
| Requirement | Suitable Technology |
|---|---|
| Instant privacy | PDLC / PNLC |
| Privacy + darker shading | DLC |
| Solar & glare control | SPD / EC |
| Exterior architectural glazing | EC / SPD / project-specific solutions |
| Existing glass renovation | Self-Adhesive Smart Film |
In short, smart glass is not a single technology.
The right solution depends on whether your project needs privacy, solar control, glare reduction, or a combination of functions.
